Alia Bhatt stars as the titular character. She beautifully conveys the traits and persona of her character, despite playing an older character. It is safe to say that the director-actress pair looks very comfortable working together. ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ does not follow a single genre and is a mix of historical, drama, and Bollywood masala. As hinted by the ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ trailer, Vijay Raaz also makes a surprising appearance as a transwoman, playing a pivotal role in the story.
The film has become a big hit with audiences and marks a triumphant return for physical releases in the post-COVID era.
Gangubai Kathiawadi Cast
Along with Alia Bhatt in the central role, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ cast also includes starring names like Vijay Raaz, Shantanu Maheshwari, Seema Pahwa, and a fierce cameo from Ajay Devgan. However, the story focuses on Bhatt’s character, with others playing supporting parts. Of course, there are some aspects from a real person in Bhatt’s character. Gangubai Kothewali is mentioned in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. She is the inspiration behind the book Gangubai’s meteoric rise from a helpless 16-year old to the ruler of the underworld forms the film’s substance. But the film is mostly fictional. It is similar to Pushpa’s story from ‘Pushpa,’ but with aesthetic and cultural differences.
Gangubai Kathiawadi: Technical Aspects
Indeed, it is natural for viewers to expect a great setting and grandiose visuals in a Sanjay Bhansali film. If his previous films are anything to go by, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ continues in the same vein. The crew handles every detail of every job, which they do exceptionally well. There are some possible fragments of authenticity lost because of the large-scale capture. The period essence is brought out in the fascinating costume designs that instantly catch the eye. Chief among the technical superiority of Bhansali is the camerawork and songs. Bhansali shoulders the responsibility magnificently and produces yet another classic.
Gangubai Kathiawadi: Worth Watching or Not?
Having said all that, Bhansali’s period piece is a roller coaster ride. Although the user reviews might say otherwise, the austere visuals combine with passionate performances from the ensemble. Go into the film with grand expectations because the film will overwhelm them. You will cherish it.
