Hindi Movie Review – Sitaare Zameen Par

Sitaare Zameen Par Movie Review

Sitaare Zameen Par is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language sports comedy film directed by R. S. Prasanna and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. It is adapted from the 2018 Spanish film Campeones.

This movie is the spiritual sequel to the famous 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par’. It was released in the theatres on 20th June 2025.

Plot Overview

The film Sitaare Zameen Par starts by introducing a hard-to-like basketball coach Gulshan (played by Amir Khan). Due to his difficult personality, he is facing problems in personal as well as professional life. In the first few minutes of the film, he gets suspended from his position and even ends up in court on DUI charges. As his punishment, the judge assigns him to train a team of individuals with mental disabilities.

Soon, we are introduced to the team members with their quirks, fears, and challenges. The subsequent story revolves around how these new bonds help Gulshan become a better version of himself. He learns to accept differences, overcomes fears, and even ends up reconciling with his wife Suneeta (played by Genelia Deshmukh).

Imperfect Characters – Really Sitaare Zameen Par

Main characters from Sitaare Zameen Par review

Unlike the spiritual prequel where the mentor has all the answers, and helps Ishaan to fit in, this story takes an entirely different approach. Gulshan, as a character, is not likable and will probably not make the viewers root for him, at least in the beginning. His rudeness and gruffness pose a solid juxtaposition to the team’s open-mindedness. They are all so different that to them different is just a way of life. Nothing to comment on, and nothing to shame someone for.

However, this is the same imperfection that makes the subsequent softness from Gulshan seem that much more precious. It’s also admirable how his words may be rough, yet his actions with the players are always sweet. He is also willing to learn from them, and that makes his growth that much more believable. Plus the creators didn’t make him 100% lovable by the end of it – again lending credibility to his transformation. He remains a slick, cunning, and rule-bending individual. Just that he uses it for the benefit of his team.

Treatment of a sensitive topic like mental disability

One of the best things about this movie is that by the end, the systemic issues are not “fixed”. The players don’t become ‘acceptable’ in the eyes of the general society. They still deal with general public ridicule and still retain their quirks and mannerisms.

However, owing to the lack of public knowledge and just the sheer absence of discourse surrounding such topics, some scenes do become expositional.

Another issue comes from the sheer number of characters in Sitaare Zameen Par. There are so many characters and their story arcs to follow, that it sometimes feels like we do not get as deep of a dive into the players’ lives. We are shown snippets in a way but there is no real establishment of their complex characters. This issue definitely stems from the time constraints that come with trying to tell a story in the format of a movie. Personally, I wanted to see so much more of this team that I would welcome a series spin-off about this with open arms.

The creators have definitely tried to focus on breaking stereotypes, sometimes even in a very heavy-handed manner. The players have crushes and romantic partners. Some have a unique sense of style. A badass player who smokes and starts fights. Another character placed firmly on the invisible spectrum of the disability is just one of the ways they have done so.

Music

While the background music is done well enough that it never jars you out of an emotion, it is nothing inspirational. The same goes for the songs. They are fun, cute but in no way memorable at first listen. This becomes even more apparent when compared to its spiritual prequel with its iconic songs that still live on in our memories.

However, in a world of constant remakes, I am glad that the songs are new and crafted solely for this movie. They fit in and help convey the emotions of the movie perfectly.

Storytelling

The movie Sitaare Zameen Par never truly becomes boring for sure. It will also leave you wanting more. Having said that, I do think the final match sequence could have been better. There is a moment of epiphany that Gulshan is going through once the final match ends, and we can see it play across his face. Yet, the creators insist on driving the point home by having Gulshan explain it to Suneeta. Just like how an explanation kills a joke, this moment gets ruined too.

Another aspect that was underwhelming was the actual point of contention between Gulshan and Suneeta. It was not something that either of them could compromise on. Compared to Suneeta, Gulshan came across as a manchild. Especially with his constant reluctance to communicate about the topic at all. Yet the way Suneeta brought lightness and grace to the situation, somehow made the couple very believable. Despite that, the resolution of their issues was hasty and remained unexplained.

Notable supporting characters

Sitaare Zameen Par review dialogue

The character of  Gulshan’s mother is an absolute icon. She loves her son but also serves him medicinal truth. The way the bond between mother and son is shown is very organic and very cute. Her relationship with her daughter-in-law is sweet too. Overall any time she is on-screen, she absolutely manages to win everyone’s hearts.

Another notable character is ‘Kartar Paaji’. He ends up as a mentor, dropping invaluable nuggets of wisdom with a dose of humor. It’s really entertaining to watch him explain concepts to Gulshan while constantly challenging the latter’s belief systems.

Last but not the least, is the character of ‘Daulatji’. His interactions with Gulshan especially in the second half are peak comedy.

Comedy

This movie does a fantastic job with its element of comedy. A lot of these moments especially come from Gulshan and the players’ interactions. It’s such a breath of fresh air to see a clean, humorous comedy that doesn’t rely on innuendos or pop-culture memes, or unintentionally funny threats.

Parting Thoughts

If you have already watched the original Spanish movie, then this Sitaare Zameen Par is not going to blow your mind. However, in a string of hyper-violent, sexual, or even dark movies that have come out in recent times, this one feels like a sweet breeze. It’s optimistic and sweet with no back-stabbing or politics. It just focuses on good fun and maybe some small lessons along the way.

I will definitely recommend this as a movie that can be watched with the whole family.
